Choosing a preschool backpack: why your child should pick it, not you

What happens to the backpack at preschool every day (without you)

The preschool teacher won't tell you directly, but she knows exactly which backpacks the children open on their own and which ones she opens for them — every day, ten times over. A snack in the morning, another mid-morning, a change of shoes for the garden, a water bottle after lunch and sometimes pyjamas for nap time. A preschool backpack isn't just a bag for carrying things. It's the first object your child learns to handle completely on their own — and you're not there.

That's exactly why choosing a preschool backpack is so tricky. In the shop, you're the one holding it. You test the zips, feel the fabric, compare designs. But that backpack will never be only in an adult's hands — it will be in the hands of a three-, four- or five-year-old who has a completely different grip strength, a different range of movement and a different idea of patience.

Why most preschool backpacks fail at the first zip

The most common reason a backpack doesn't work at preschool has nothing to do with capacity or ergonomics. It's the fastening. The child can't open it on their own or — even worse — can't close it. And what happens to a backpack that won't close? It stays open. Then the bottle falls out, or other essentials you packed so carefully. It's a scenario we've heard from parents countless times.

Zip vs magnet vs press studs — what a three-year-old's hands can manage

A zip with a large pull is the most intuitive option for small children. The condition: the pull has to be big enough for the child's fingers to grip it at all. A magnet sounds elegant, but a three-year-old often can't line it up properly. Press studs? They belong on a handbag, not on a child's backpack — at least not their first one. Backpacks with a single buckle fasten quickly, and the child gets to practise fine motor skills.

Ask yourself: can your child manage it with wet hands after washing? When they're in a hurry because the others are already heading outside? That's the moment that decides whether a backpack works.

The hanging loop: one detail that decides independence

In most Czech preschools, backpacks hang on pegs in the corridor. Children take them down and hang them up themselves. If a backpack has no loop at the top — or the loop is so short the child can't reach it — hanging it up becomes a daily battle. Our BECKMANN preschool backpacks have a loop designed so that a child can grab it easily and hang the backpack up without an adult's help.

A size that won't knock your child off their feet

A preschool backpack shouldn't be wider than the child's shoulders. That sounds simple, but in practice we see the exact opposite — parents buy a backpack ‘for when they've grown a bit’ and the preschooler then looks as if they're carrying a sleeping bag on a week-long trek.

How to check the right weight at home

Fill the backpack with what your child will actually carry: a water bottle, a snack and perhaps a change of clothes. Put it on their back. Watch for two things — whether they lean backwards and whether the straps dig into their shoulders. A child's spine is still developing, and even a seemingly light backpack with poorly distributed weight can overload a small back. That's why we rely on lightweight materials and padded straps even for our smallest backpacks.

If you're not sure how to adjust the backpack correctly for your child, we've prepared a simple guide to adjusting a preschool backpack.

What a backpack has to survive — and what it doesn't

A preschool backpack ends up on the floor, in the mud, in puddles, in the sandpit. It will be dragged by its straps, filled with stones from walks and tested as a seat. That's normal. The material has to be water-resistant and easy to wipe clean — because a good preschool backpack should save hassle not only for the children, but for you too.

On the other hand, it doesn't need a dozen pockets, pencil organisers or a special tablet compartment. A three-year-old needs one main compartment, one side pocket for a bottle and a clear way of opening it. Nothing more. The simpler, the better.

What to ask when choosing (and what not to)

Forget asking ‘how many litres?’ Ask this instead:

  • Can my child open it on their own, even in a hurry?
  • Can they hang it on the peg at preschool by themselves?
  • Does it sit on their back, or does it stick out beyond their shoulders?
  • Will it survive an encounter with a puddle?

And above all: don't be afraid to put the backpack in your child's hands before you buy it. In our shops in Prague, Brno and Ostrava you can try all the models in person — and watch what your child does with it first. That will tell you more than any specification in a table.

Preschool backpack FAQs

From what age does a child need a preschool backpack?

A preschool backpack is suitable from around the age of 3, when a child starts going to preschool. At this age they're learning to be independent, and having their own backpack helps them manage the daily routine — snacks, changing shoes, getting ready for a walk or an outing.

How do you choose the right preschool backpack?

Focus on whether your child can open and close it on their own — that matters more than design or capacity. The backpack mustn't be wider than the child's shoulders and should have padded straps. We go into more detail in our guide to choosing a preschool backpack.

What capacity should a preschool backpack have?

A compact backpack that fits a bottle, a snack and perhaps a change of clothes is enough for preschoolers. What matters more than litres, though, is weight distribution and simple organisation — one main compartment and a side pocket for a drink are plenty.

Can a preschool backpack be used for trips too?

Yes, a good-quality preschool backpack will also serve on family trips, at after-school activities or at summer camp. Our BECKMANN preschool backpacks are designed to handle everyday use as well as the occasional outdoor adventure.
